Implicit mappings in Sass

I’m brand new to sass and I’m trying to use it to style this site:
I’m doing all the usual sass tricks (which I’ve been more comfortable with in other languages) in order to write a mixin that creates the grid layout. But, I’m having some trouble with the technique of embedding the style rules into the site’s css.
I’ve found a couple of tutorials that explain the technique. Both involve writing a.sass file with a rule that looks like
.container { width: 100%; }
.grid {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(12, 1fr);
padding: 1em;
grid-gap: 1em;
}

.row {
display: grid;
grid-template-rows: repeat(4, 1fr);
padding: 1em;
grid-gap: 1em;
margin-bottom: 1em;
}

And then referencing the file in the site’s css
@import “sass/grid”;

But I’m not sure how to reference the repeated blocks, and I haven’t been able to find any resources that actually do it. Is there a way to list all of the files that are in a particular directory in the stylesheet for that directory, so I can just dump them all in there? Is there a better way than using that “repeating”-thing?
I’m asking because I’m at the point where I realize that Sass is a little more advanced than I expected it to be.

You can get what you want by using scss, not sass. sass is a compile to css tool, and scss is a compile to css tool and a design language.
You can get the declarations you want by using the @extend directive
