an improved algorithm is presented for determining crack diameter, length, and depth in a composite member using a hysteresis formula. the paper discusses the determination of crack diameter, length, and depth in a composite plate or rib according to a hysteresis formula and stress distribution variation by introducing three types of hysteresis curves. the crack length is measured by comparing the peak load and displacement. the crack depth is usually determined by the crack face or by the friction force. if the fracture face is used for the determination of the crack depth, it is necessary to consider the load transfer in the crack face. the load carried by the crack face is generated at the interior nodes of a finite element discretization. if the crack depth is measured at the interior nodes, the load transferred by a crack face is proportional to the corresponding domain element. hence, the crack depth at the interior nodes is the mean crack depth of the domains. to find the crack depth at the crack face, the total load carried by a finite element discretization is divided by the average load per fracture face to determine the average load per fracture face. the average load per fracture face is also obtained by dividing the total load carried by each finite element by the number of finite elements in the discretization.

damage in the front side of specimen gc5 is due to the crack that spread in the direction perpendicular to the fibers in the outer layer ( figure 8a ). the failure of the outer layer was due to the unsymmetrical load, which resulted in bending of the fibers in the layer. the x-ray image in figure 8b shows the fibers broken up in the left side of the outer layer, which lead to the failure of the layer, and in the right side, the layer was not damaged. the third layer in the back side of specimen gc5, which was detached during the preparation of the specimen, failed because of the composite failure, which occurred due to the significant impact of the hot plastic flow from the specimen and high bending stress. in the back side of specimen gc5, the damage is due to the high tensile bending stress, which caused the layer to peel off, as shown in figure 8b. the x-ray image in figure 8c shows the fiber split-up with less penetration of the impactor.
