in the ashrae heat balance method, the simulation of thermal energy transfer through walls, floors and ceilings is greatly simplified. similar to other building simulation systems, the simulation is conducted by establishing a series of equations that are applied sequentially in a typical building to calculate the temperature and energy requirements of mechanical and electrical equipment and of occupants. unlike other simulation systems, the ashrae heat balance method is a time-independent calculation, and it accounts for the thermal energy requirements of any space in the building at any time during the occupancy period. at the same time, this method allows the user to specify the type and flow of heat energy to or from the space. with this method, all of the data input to the model is set up and taken from a source that is either directly controlled or controlled by the user.
the most sophisticated class of thermal model that has been developed is the ashrae standard 183. the method looks at the heating and cooling building loads as a complex system of passive linear elements, each with a thermal load for the equivalent hvac loads of air and water.
ashrae and the air conditioning contractors of america (acca) have developed a new standard, ashrae/acca standard 211p, standard for commercial building energy audits.the standard is available for public comment until january 4, 2016. you can download it from ashraes site by selecting 211p from this list. please note: the standard will automatically download (not open in a new tab). you can review and then send comments to ashrae before january 4th.
the ashrae standard 213, estimating inverter-powered air conditioning systems for residential buildings and rooftop units, has been in effect since 2003. inverter-powered systems today are becoming more prevalent. projectors are now standard on many large-screen and hdtv displays. the ashrae standard provides planners and designers of new and existing residential buildings and rac units detailed guidelines on inverter-powered systems. this standard doesn’t provide a definitive approach to evaluating inverter-powered systems, but it does provide a starting place for discussion and the opportunity to explore various options. the standard is currently in draft status and will be available for public comment until march 28, 2016. please follow the information about the open comment period in the 2014 standard to find the latest draft. the most recent draft is available in pdf format on the ashrae website.
