No matter how advanced music players are, users are rarely happy with the playback controls and song information features that are on offer. Thankfully, there are lots of third-party utilities that can help fill this gap.
Audio Band is an interesting option, enabling you to see information about songs and manage playback with the help of a taskbar toolbar. It only offers support for Spotify at present, and it is still in the early stages of development, but it works well enough.
Taskbar toolbar that can be tricky to set up
Audio Band doesn’t come with a classic installer, but you can set it up by simply running the install.cmd batch file as an administrator. Once installed, it will be added to the Toolbars taskbar menu, although you may need to open the menu a few times for it to show up.
When enabling the toolbar, it will be displayed on the right side of the taskbar, next to the system tray. Next, you should select the preferred audio source from the context menu. Because of recent changes to Spotify, setting it up is a fairly difficult process that involves creating a new app from the Spotify dashboard. You can read the full instructions here.

After configuring everything, the toolbar should display information about the current song in the taskbar, and it also enables you to start/stop playback and skip to the next or previous track. Progress is also displayed, but seeking is not supported.
At the moment, Audio Band only works with Spotify. Unfortunately, we noticed that the song information displayed in the toolbar froze occasionally, at which point we had to re-select the audio source to get everything back up and running.

When it comes to visuals, we were quite pleased with the design of the toolbar, and you can also customize the color and dimensions of pretty much every UI element, as well as select a different font.
In short, Audio Band is a pretty impressive tool that provides you with a unique way of managing playback and viewing information about your music. It is still in the early stages of development, but it looks very promising.

It would be best if the client would support Multiple windowing, so you could set it up and not use it, without having to close the rest. Also, a player as such, that can collect it’s data and set up a kinda automatic artist display.

Pavel, then add in all the music processing plugins and there is no limit on what you can achieve.

Update: Audio Band just finished the public beta and is now available from the Microsoft Store. Pricing is set at $1.49 and it is also available as a free trial.

I was hoping for support for Last.fm, Pandora, GrooveRadio, and the likes.

While it is good the program is still in beta and not feature complete yet. If you want to even try it. You should read the notes to understand how to set it up and maybe even figure out how to set up the Spotify in the first place. It’s a huge learning curve.

Well, as said before, and I never hesitated before, to say anything in a post which can be considered biased, I just need to follow the rules of the site I am posting here, and never say anything kind of not completely supported by facts.

Today, I’m reviewing Audio Band, an audio application that can both stream songs from Spotify and be used to manage music playback from the taskbar.

Simply put, this is a huge deal.

I’ve always struggled with the idea of using the taskbar to manage my music. I’m not a die-hard fan of using any part of the taskbar, but when I’m listening to music and decide that I want to switch my current song, I’m forced to use the taskbar. For the most part, I just scoot to the right, grab the Spotify icon, and wait for the song to start. Once that’s done, I’m forced to hit the left button and move the taskbar back to its original position. Then I need to start over on the right side of the taskbar.

This issue wasn’t limited to only me. If a friend wants to start playing a song on their laptop, they are also forced to deal with the taskbar and its shortcomings.

To date, there hasn’t been a good solution to this problem. It’s time that changed, and Audio Band is the first step in that direction.

What is Audio Band?
Audio Band is a dual-purpose music player and taskbar app. It offers you the ability to quickly go back and forth between playing songs from Spotify and using the taskbar to manage playback.

It also adds a toolbar to the taskbar. If you don’t like this, you can toggle it off in the settings. Audio Band offers the option to use different taskbar buttons or to swap them out for custom shortcuts.

Audio Band is the first taskbar music app that can double as a Spotify music player. Although we’ve seen similar apps before, most of them are centered on the music player, and this is the first one to focus on the taskbar. It’s more than a compliment.

What makes this app special is that you can use it in two different ways. When you launch it, the app uses the Spotify API to stream music to the app and adds a playlist to the app window.

Although not a common feature, the taskbar can be added to the taskbar panel (top-right area of the taskbar). By default, the taskbar is located in the bottom-right corner of the screen. It’s important to use some clear space in this location and avoid adding too many items.

You can also put the taskbar on the bottom right or top right panel of the screen. To manage which of these panels is visible, you can select whether the icon list should be displayed, or whether the tiny icon buttons should be displayed. Adding to this is the active / inactive option that you can toggle between, so you can decide if you prefer a static view or a more dynamic one.

This will display the icon buttons for all the applications that are running on your computer. By default, this will be set to automatic, but you can click on it to toggle between automatic and manual settings.

If you set it to manual, the taskbar icon buttons will automatically update to reflect the applications that are running or not. You can adjust the refresh rate for this manually from the Taskbar Options control panel.

If you want to display a more compact icon list, this will disable the icon buttons for all the applications that are running on your computer. This will still display the tiny icons in the taskbar for all of the applications that are running or not. This will also display the Alt-Tab icon for applications that are currently being focused.
