Photographers, novices and professionals have probably tried Photoshop. It’s expensive, and even in the tutorial market, beginners can find help for free. In addition, I show you how to flatten layers to turn them on top of one another to create a composite, how to use keyboard shortcuts to change tools and navigate in Photoshop, and how to apply layer masks. However, I save the bulk of my work in layers to edit multiple elements at once and see how they interact. In fact, it’s so easy to create layers that you’re likely to mix them up, as I did for this tutorial. Although Photoshop has a few other attributes to help you categorize layers, I stick with the concept that each layer represents a particular edit — even if that edit is changing the opacity, blending color, adding a border, or recoloring a shape.

Adding a text layer

Creating a text layer in Photoshop is quite simple and very useful if you want to create a text effect for your artwork. Here, I illustrate the steps to create a text layer. I apply a few customizations to my letters to give a unique effect. I also create two types of text: a simple single-color text layer and a more complex, multi-color text layer.
