The Carmina Burana is most famously performed in the first movement of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, composed in 1936. It has since become something of a standard folk air and is still occasionally performed. Despite this widespread popularity, however, no other of the eight Carmina Burana movements has had anything approaching equal renown.

Perhaps the most dramatic element of the traditional performance of Carmina Burana is the way that the movements are often sung by one singer alone, often a male voice, on a verse-by-verse basis. There is no chorus line for most of the movements, and although it is fairly customary for the singer to punctuate the sung lines with long instrumental and vocal pauses in a way that creates an impression of the text of Carmina Burana as a poem, no formal connection with any of the poems or sources for the music has ever been made.

The Carmina Burana was composed by Carl Orff in 1936 and published in the following year, as Cantiones Profanae (Secular Songs), Cantiones Sacrae (Sacred Songs) and Chorales (Chorales) for altos, tenors, basses and mixed chorus. The title Carmina Burana (from the word Buran) describes it as “songs of Beuren”, the ancient name of the area in which it was composed. In the 21st century, the Carmina Burana was revived by the experimental music ensemble Remote Control (later renamed This Fall) and the German composer and musicologist Hubert Laws. Influenced by the idea of “free-text” music, the Carmina Burana was originally performed without the benefit of written or musical notation.

Many of the songs in the Carmina Burana were adapted from medieval German poems, from various sources including hagiographies, grammars, hymns and riddles. The song cycle has only four movements, named after four of the poems, chosen as a reference point for the cycle as a whole. Only recently have musicologists begun to place the songs in their medieval contexts, pointing to possibly very diverse sources and the various medieval parodies and allusions contained in them. The original program for the Carmina Burana was a four-movement cycle, with one movement being sung each day in a sequence running from morning to evening. The composer of the solo cantata (“cantata” = setting to music) completed in 1937, Johann Sebastian Bach began this trend in his Mass in B minor (BWV 232) of 1726, the most famous choral work of the 18th century…
