The missions begin as the player is sent to go rescue a doctor who has been kidnapped by the Monster Soldiers. Along the way, the player is given access to all the weapons on their way to the key target, which is located somewhere in the depths of the Contra base. Each weapon has a unique attack pattern and is easy to get accustomed to as it’s first instinct is to become the lead soldier. You will find yourself using Contra’s trademark three-way weapons system to help in shooting through doors and turning off light switches, as well as finding hidden items in order to be able to pick up the ammo or a health pot before going through the next room. Every mission gives the player more skills and weapons to upgrade with.

It’s not just the difficulty, the simple fact that the game is borked. Add the fact that it’s too long and has too many characters, and you have a quick mess. I would say “just get the Contra Collection”, but the Contra Collection only contains Contra 1 and Contra 3.

I’m not a fan of the action, I’m not a fan of the formula, and it’s not a challenge (I won the original Contra 3 on easy). Please, somebody, take it out of the living room and destroy it once and for all.

It’s a tough call whether this game should be classified as Contra or Contra III. It was made for both the SNES and Genesis and developed by Konami. It’s a mix of all three games in the series, with some elements from each.

Firstly, Contra Shattered Soldier is one of Konami’s most recent ventures on the PS2. However, the game is developed by High Impact Entertainment, Inc., who did the superlative work on 3D Contra: Hard Corps. The 2D graphics are also done quite well, although the presentation isn’t as polished as Konami’s own.
