deploymentWarranty Tips for Consumers

Warranty Tips for Consumers

Warranty statements are relatively easy to evaluate when you’re thinking about an expensive piece of equipment or even an older appliance or kitchen tool. Most of the time, the equipment manufacturer will state that the product has a normal three-year warranty. You can probably understand the warranty period and the implied warranty period. There’s no controversy on that point.

Where it gets tricky and ultimately confusing, though, is when the manufacturer states that the product is covered by a “limited warranty,” or “extended warranty,” or “deferred warranty.” The only “dollars and cents” people ever want to know, are, can I have what you paid for the product for the extended warranty period that you’re offering?

The confusion stems from the fact that manufacturers are either required to offer extended warranties as a requirement to sell their products, or they can give an extended warranty to generate additional sales for their products. It may be that the selling price is higher with an extended warranty than without. It may be, more importantly, that the cost of the extended warranty to the manufacturer is significantly higher. While the warranty period could be limited or extended as a condition of sale, most manufacturers do not consider that the terms of the warranty are a condition of purchase. It’s more like a “thank you” gift to the customer.

If the warranty is intended to extend the life of the product, there will be an increase in the coverage of the warranty compared to when the warranty was originally sold. However, manufacturers’ strategies for selling additional products with warranties have not kept pace with the increased cost of those warranties.

Manufacturers often shift the responsibility of the warranty claims for products to their warranty repair
