I took one of my newer Macs that I bought when I got my current Mac Pro and loaded it up with the latest NVIDA driver. I set the sysctl settings to enable NonVolatile Storage Mode which modified my BCD / Device Manager / Registry settings such as below. I chose to edit the existing setting as the new settings were not working at this point.

HACK ASUS GPU Tweak is not supposed to work without an NVMe boot, so this hack saves you a bit of time. Note that this hack was verified for specific Mac Pros and you can test it out if you have not already. Also note that it’s possible NVMe booting was disabled on your Mac Pro’s firmware upgrade. If you intend to use a hack to enable it, make sure you backup your EFI your good to go especially if you’re upgrading using macOS. Make sure to see the End Note for more updates and tricks.

Due to a bug between Steam for Xcode and the GTX 1080/980/980Ti Maxwell GPUs with macOS Sierra, the virtual graphics driver will cause performance lag when Macs with those GPUs play games. Solution is to download the Mac Pro driver and install the virtual driver that ships with it.

The good news is that this hack may fix some of the problems you may be encountering. You may not need the hack but it’s not broken. If you’d like to try it, you can give this a shot. Note that I didn’t do it for my own machine, so I’m not totally sure. Let me know how you get on.

For my setup, I noticed that it wasn’t really faster than my old ~800MHz (2.8Ghz) i7 Mac Pro which I replaced in Jan 2016. I tried running the latest Nvidia driver that ships with 10.13 beta. It sucked. You may want to use your other launchpad with your current GPU and create a new launchpad with the hacked driver.
