some of the producers of smallville did not really like the concept of the show ending, but the network did not care, and that’s why the series was continued. the show’s creators had come up with a clever way to extend the characters, and not just the story: the characters’ stories were evolving. in the first season, clark, having learned his powers, had to decide whether to use them to save a woman or not. in the second season, he has to choose between lana and lois lane. and the hero/anti-hero drama doesn’t end there.

characters can always run, but if they do, they leave behind a trail of emotions. if a player rolls down their drive (value and relationship) from a game for the next one, they can choose whether to roll again or just leave it where it falls. dropping down a drive without a roll is a bit of a bummer for the other players, and is called shirking a character.

since the relationship map for a group of pcs is always changing, the gm is also responsible for making sure that the players know what the map looks like at all times. this is done with a declarations mechanic, where gms create pieces of paper with the phases of the game and place them in the rooms of the story, so that players can see what is going on. players can use these pieces of paper to discover what their characters know, and they can flip these pieces over to reveal what their characters know that they don’t yet.

since clark kents identity is clark kents identity, and clark kents life is clark kents life, the characters can be both clark kents and a different person at the same time. players may have characters that are in one secret identity, and in another, but these are like the different facets of a single identity. characters can fall into a series of secret identities, but they can never become a different person completely.

the primary focus of this version of smallville is not on survival and combat, the usual focus of most other rpgs. instead, smallville role-playing game is a system for developing and running episodic role-playing adventures. every episode has a driving conflict that the players can pursue in order to further their leads’ goals. the rules cover how to run adventures, and the system gives the gm a complete outline of the kind of story that the show’s writers will most likely be interested in.
the core of the smallville role-playing game is the narrative and conflict-driven life game of the television show. it is a role-playing game for one to four players, played over the course of ten episodes. the game is written so that it can be played either straight through, or, if you want, you can interrupt the game to go off and do your own thing. the game does not try to immerse you in the world of smallville or its television show. instead, it’s more like buffy the vampire slayer role-playing game, angel role-playing game, or firefly role-playing game, in that you work with the characters you’re playing, the story arc of the show, and the basic ruleset without trying to get lost in the show’s world.
the first season of smallville is broken into two sections. the first four episodes are set during the first two years of high school, and the second four episodes take place during the first year of college. smallville role-playing game is built around these two sections, and each contains a set of charts, tables, and sample characters. the first four episodes offer the only interesting options for characters, so that’s what we focus on here.
