professor gordon kennedy (msc 1921, bsc 1923) died aged 105 on 7 december 2007, and had been a member of the wits staff since 1921. kennedy, an electrical engineer and magnetron manufacturer, had made a significant contribution to the development of the magnetron and in 1926 was the inventor of the radar detector. he was elected vice-chairman of the wits university council in 1939 and, in 1970, became the first president of the maties society when he was president of the university for three years. his erudition, insight, and practical problem-solving abilities brought inspiration and great rewards to those who worked with him. kennedy could charm anyone on the radio. in 1954, he left the service to become a full-time member of the staff of the electrical engineering department. in 1957, he was made a full professor of electrical engineering. in that same year, he was awarded the prestigious rotha award in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of science and technology at the university.
wits graduate, former business manager of the associated management students, and current vice-chancellor, themba katkatela, passed away on 5 october 2008. katkatela, aged 36, was a wits undergraduate (facs, 2000) and ma student (2001) and worked in the management centre and business unit before taking up the vice-chancellor’s post at wits in 2007. he recently completed a book titled, a good education: achieving academic excellence at wits. katkatela was an inspirational individual who cared about the issues affecting those around him. he was an active member of the university’s academic staff union and used his key personal relationships to achieve a variety of personal and official objectives on behalf of the union.
