Dhoom: 3 is comparable to the second installment of the Fast and Furious series: a smartly directed, knock-down, drag-out, come-from-behind actioner. On a certain level, it is in the tradition of a great Bollywood actioner, like Deewaar or Sholay. But, with all the running jokes and the great soundtrack, it is also, albeit more smartly than before, closer to Hollywood.

All that said, there are problems with the movie. Most of the fight scenes are too short, and many of them are just a little too easy. Watching the movie, one feels that Dhoom: 3 knows it is not the best Bollywood action movie in years, but it tries too hard to justify its existence. It is also short on character development, and perhaps the film’s most implausible character is the chief villain.

However, the movie doesn’t overtly attempt to twist the story of a sad little man into a feel-good romp, whose qualities it might not deliver. It’s a little more tragic than that, one that would resonate more with viewers if it were released during a period of financial crisis in which the whole Bhai Bhai theme was slightly more pertinent. The movie’s most poignant moment, however, takes place not in Chicago but in India, where a low-caste Dalit, ill-treated by the entire system, gets to take revenge on a childhood oppressor. The desperation to deliver on this powerful scene is all the more astonishing, given that the rest of the movie is such a comfortable formula.

The movie has a few decent set pieces, most notably the climactic cell scene, and a handful of decent, conventional, over-the-top action scenes, but they’re mixed in with scenes that end rather abruptly, as though we had to go in some quick-time toward the next event, rather than being invested in the story. When it comes to actors, one is too young to even remember old Uday Chopra, and the rest of the cast is decent though unexceptional, with no one who rises above the rest. There are two digital effects sequences with some decent comic book stuff, but they don’t carry the weight of the movie.

It has some impressive fight sequences, but while it does a competent job of establishing the leads, character and setting, the story simply isn’t that different from the second. The action has been rejuvenated with the help of stuntmen Ramana (Marvel’s Iron Man) and Ramen (The Expendables 2) Ramachandra Rao. Dhoom 3 has some smart set-pieces and big chases; the latter being a flamboyant affair in a dingy bus, which takes its lead from a similar sequence in the first film.”
According to sources close to the project, the sequel to the 2001 hit Dhoom had been set in motion last year. The film which was supposed to star British actor, Lee Child will now be starring Uday Chopra
If ever a mainstream Bollywood superhero movie had a built in irreverent tone, it would be the Dhoom franchise. And while you can’t call it a cult series, as The Expendables was called, in the Dhoom universe, there’s a sense that the serial killers don’t want to kill the hero, they simply can’t wait to take the hero out. There’s a difference between homage and appropriation.
The Dhoom film has always been a parable of the growing desperation for commercial action films in Bollywood, and a critique of the demand for ever-more fast, loud, fun blockbusters. While the attempt at an arthouse feel made the Dhoom franchise intermittently more enjoyable than many of the more crude offerings in this vein, Dhoom: 3 remains a study in entertainment. The film has been hailed for taking its time and playing a bit straight to the audience, and with the help of a good script, hard action scenes, and a decent theme song, the film’s fair balance makes it for a smooth ride.
