malignancy-associated sweet’s syndrome was initially included as a subset of classical sweet’s syndrome. however, since many of the cases of sweet’s syndrome are cancer-related, several authors have chosen to distinguish between the classical form and the malignancy-associated form of this condition. the dermatosis can be the cutaneous harbinger of either an undiagnosed visceral malignancy in a previously cancer-free individual or an unsuspected cancer recurrence in an oncology patient.

cutaneous sweet’s syndrome (css) is a neutrophilic dermatosis that is characterized by fever, painful cutaneous lesions and erythematous plaques. the syndrome can occur either as a disease localized to the body surface, or in association with systemic manifestations, such as a systemic inflammatory response. css usually occurs in association with severe immunologic or hematologic disorders. the small number of patients with css has resulted in case reports and case series reported in the literature, with no well-designed population-based study investigating css. css typically occurs in middle-aged women, and most patients have underlying systemic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease or previous neutropenia. css is a benign disorder that has a good response to glucocorticoids. however, many patients have a relapse of css after the cessation of steroids. in most cases, css is a solitary manifestation, and usually lasts for less than a month. css is a relatively common skin condition, usually resolving within 2-4 weeks, but in the majority of cases, the lesions do not resolve.
