in many cases, the boiler is operated in conjunction with some form of external combustion air supply system (such as forced-air or ducted-fan systems). the external combustion air supplies may be operated at a different speed, volume, and/or duration than the boiler’s fan. the specified flame-holding time for the combustion air fan is defined in the current edition of the code as 0.10 seconds.

it is the responsibility of the owner, operator, or contract designer of the boiler to ensure that the code requirements have been met. the boiler designer should provide the proposed boiler with appropriate air-handling, ventilation, and air quality characteristics. if the boiler does not meet the requirements of the boiler and combustion systems hazards code, the designer must provide the required modifications, in accordance with the code requirements.

this appendix b includes boiler codes that are developed by the national fire protection association (nfpa). for more than 90 years, nfpa has provided the fire protection and related services necessary for protecting people, property, and the environment. the nfpa codes have become the most widely accepted and used codes of practice in the united states.

this section is part of the nfpa’s “boiler and combustion systems hazards code” appendix b. in addition to each boiler, this appendix lists the acceptable combustion air supplies and the applicable code requirements.

the nfpa’s new hazards code for boilers and combustion systems was published in 2017. this edition of the nfpa document replaces the former hazards code for boilers and combustion systems. it is based on the same version of the hazard communication standard (hcs) that is used for hazardous chemicals. the new hazards code for boilers and combustion systems includes the following new hazard sections:
