The Babadook may not be a light horror comedy, but rather an old-fashioned ghost story that doesn’t shy away from terror or the macabre. Horror aficionados will find plenty to savor here, but plenty of others can also discover something new. Kent’s directorial debut, The Babadook, is a first-rate entry in the genre, an excellent film to complete the season.

In the supernatural classic of the year, an evil clown forces a young boy into a nightmare world of crime, gangs and mayhem. It’s the 1988 UK film version of “The Babadook” or how to stop a killer clown and while it barely resembles the Sydney original, it is still a creepy, beautiful and wonderfully eccentric Irish film that will have you wanting more every step of the way. Join Sam in an amazing journey of true fear and what a work of art it is.

The Babadook gets bonus points for trying to tackle the question of a demon using a child to carry out its murders. The concept of a night fright for adults is a fun way to slap fun on a killer, but the movies success rests on its ability to convince the audience that its Mothman or MythBusters idea is more terrifying than the original. It does have its moments, not the least of which is Carl F, Forrests supernatural investigation with Hawkins. He tells of a farmer who had a domestic helper. Not being entirely fluent in the Slavic tongue, he let her cook dinner in the middle of a count.

While all the lurid details are out there on the internet, I think movies like The Babadook are more effective the less the pain and suffering is depicted. The children are the most important characters and are the most naturalistic. They just want to go home, and their path leads inevitably to the traditional question of childhood horror: when the parents do not love them or are in a state of neglect. The contrast with the werewolf counts as a point in the horror film heritage of Stephen King. In the best of the genre, classic TV shows like The Twilight Zone and films like Rosemarys Baby , the monster is always the one thing that scares you worse than death. The horror of The Babadook is that the children are not a bulwark against the menace. They are an unintentional terror of their own making. All of the children are tortured by what they know, which is ultimately to blame for their mental state.

the director and her producers intentionally made the babadook as a very low-budget picture, something you wouldnt expect from a director who hails from the states. it’s a visual feast and kent’s execution of the production is flawless. she does a fantastic job of building tension through visual storytelling that makes the whole thing seem like a home movie, whether it’s the wide, sweeping shots of the house at night or the close-up of the mothers face as she starts to see the apparition.
i would not have been surprised if the babadook had been a more conventional creature feature. kent has made her first feature after all, and her experience with the genre has been limited. however, for all of its eccentricities, the picture is a heartfelt, fearless addition to the canon of great horror. the babadook is a classic monster, a beautiful nightmare who will haunt you forever, just like its owner.
