On this trip, the 27-year-old Rush is going to explore the deepest of the two wrecks, the Titanics sister ship, the Californian, which sank simultaneously. Rushs self-built mini-sub is fitted with sonar and a laser scanner. It will take him down to 1,650 feet.
He is currently conducting research to create 3-D reconstructions of the lost ships. He is testing the mini-sub in both the Titanic and Californian using techniques developed by Echovision.
at oceangates, his team installed the acoustic monitoring system and tested its ability to detect the crackling of the hull. the hull crackled on its first dive to 45 feet, and the system was able to detect it. at 75 feet, the crackling was more pronounced and the system detected it again. but it did not register the crackling at the highest point of the dive, at 100 feet. rush suspects the crackling was masked by lower-frequency tones, and the system did not accurately register the frequency of the crackles.
the sub is now undergoing a series of dives, and rush plans to have it ready to try by march 2013. he is excited about the potential to connect with science and humanities, and even to detect and explore the titanics scattered debris field. then it will be up to the sub divers, and the adventurers who follow them, to see what they find.
pete wanted the titanic experience to be much more than an armchair journey. his old sub, the cyclops, could take a maximum of 10 passengers, who had to lie horizontally along the floor, and for many it was more than that. so he and his wife, claire, enlisted the help of a friend, mark moran, a mathematician and science buff, to design a system that would allow them to see the wreck from multiple angles.
we make slow progress toward the wreck, pushing off from the last of the ice, which is still hard enough to crack the hulls of our vehicles. in the submersible, we use a joystick and rudder controls. with the submersible sinking, we use a touch screen to move, but we also navigate with a special ball mounted on a joystick that the crew can use to pilot the sub through the water. (my touch-screen e-mail program won’t let me leave the word “ball” in a headline, so i’ll just call it the ball.)
to our left, the fish-eye view of the titanic stretched across the cabin like a gigantic aquarium. the ship looked strangely fragile. the steel had been painted in seafoam-green and gold. its transom, a sign of a small ship that cant easily be wrecked, was framed by a sail that had been painted a deep azure.
we were too cold to look at the hull, but we could see cracks in the side of the ship, in the water and on deck. after we surfaced, a biologist from oceangates filmed the wreck. the video showed submersibles hovering over the stricken hulk, and then descending and examining the ship, frame by frame. the footage will be turned into a virtual-reality program, which rush hopes will provide the public a better understanding of the ship than the old black-and-white photos. he also hopes to work with a navy salvage team to raise the ship and haul it out of the ocean, to study its construction.
at last, we were close. then, the sub slowed as it approached the transom. it was the moment of truth. it was down, and out of the water, for only the second time. a quick survey confirmed that the hull had not cracked.
