i climbed ave caesar with some mates at champex in june 2017. i think it was the first time that i had climbed at champex, and we were really happy with the experience. the view from the top is incredible, and as we reached the summit we had a couple of beers and soaked up the stunning views. the standard of the rock is very good, and the route is perfectly clear. the cracks are really varied. the start of the route is mostly on clean, slightly overhanging edges, but then we start to get the thin, difficult crack lines. the wall continues to be a little overhanging and the best way is to bring a cordalette on the first pitch. the top third of the climb is almost entirely on overhanging, 5th class cracks that run through the roof, until the last section. the crack system is a little harder than on the 2nd route, but the whole climb is steeper than the second, and you will have a little more action in the cracks.
this route is a super fun hike to a totally amazing climb. we climbed it on a gorgeous spring day in 2015, and it was one of the first climbs i ever did! like most chamonix routes, it has a bit of everything. from the crack-to-crack-to-jams route, to long traverses, to long traverse-to-crack climbs, to some cool climbing on ice, this route has it all. i would have liked to climb it with boots and crampons, but the ice was perfect!
the first 5 pitches can be climbed with the smallest cams, and even with the smallest slings. when the cracks get a bit deeper, you can use a set of 4.5 or 5.0 slings for the first part of the route. at the crux pitches, you can use two small, easy-to-find camalots for your protection.
of course, the tour de france has long been a topic of conversation when thinking of what is the best alpine climbing and most would say that the tour dominates the conversation with grande dépression first. located in the vanoise, the french alps are often considered the heart of the alps and have an equally good reputation for alpine climbing. comparing the two mountains, the tour de france has 40% more routes, claims deloitte and is 10k higher in elevation. it is also the most viewed. yet the vanoise has 18 times the number of climbs. nevertheless, many would argue that the tour is the ‘best’ and, to be honest, it is hard to argue. the vanoise is of a much higher standard than the tour and looks a lot better. therefore, we cannot view the tour de france as the best. there is always another mountain and another route that has to be chosen. but where could the vanoise be regarded as the best?
as the highest and longest mountain in the vanoise, with the highest and longest pure crack routes and the most famous single routes, the pierre la neuve is of great value. whilst the pierre la neuve is a popular destination for long-distance runners and those looking for a route to try, there are few people who have not heard of it. it has a reputation as a bit of a ‘walkers’ or ‘runners’ version of the tour de france with only 1% of climbers, 7% of runners and 10% of hikers. whilst there is very limited climbing in the mountains, the pierre la neuve sees a lot of rock and ice climbing and has a very strong reputation in this field. the only thing that is lacking on the pierre la neuve, therefore, is the high altitude climbing in order to make it all the more appealing to climbers. nonetheless, when visiting the mountain, it would be a shame not to climb the pierre la neuve.
