I remember many years ago how over time Microsoft tried to improve XP with all sorts of updates and tricks, however, the software became quite buggy and Windows slower, but I have to say that with Windows 10 there was a fresh breath of air. Adobe managed to react quite quickly and made a few excellent decisions in the Windows 10 process (i.e. integrated Windows Defender and Surface Handwriting, paid upgrade, XPS documents, parent company acquisition, etc). I hope other developers take note of all the good things that Adobe has done. It is not enough to simply create an improved and more minimalist operating system, but the applications should be a bonus, and with Windows 10 a great one. I totally appreciate the “Focus on Experience” motto. However, even though with a fresh version of Windows I can use Photoshop to edit my photos and other similar tasks were once only possible with a combined PC/Mac set-up, it seems that Windows is still too weak for a wide range of tasks. In other words, Lightroom still needs work, even on Windows 10. Somehow it feels like Lightroom cannot import and export files other than from Lightroom. It even disallowed me to save a file with a.eps extension when I installed Lightroom 4 on Windows 10. I persevered, installed a virtualized Windows 7 and Lightroom 4, and it started working. My main issue with Lightroom is the same one as with Windows 10: if you use other applications the learning curve is significantly steeper. Still, it is clear that Adobe wants to offer their tools to Windows users on a web-based platform, which is good news for them and us. One thing that bothers me, though, are the comments regarding the versions of Windows being rendered obsolete in their website. This is simply not true. Today the website states that there will be an update for Photoshop Elements, but there is no latest version of Windows available to download. One cannot download Windows 10, only Win 7 or Win 8.1. This is not a fair reflection of the reality, however, as there are actually quite a few people still using Windows XP, who need Photoshop Elements. A rare few are still using Windows 7, which can be updated to Windows 10. I would suggest that Adobe focus more on the needs of its customers and release for free Lightroom and Photoshop Elements 2021 for Windows 7 and 8 users, with a point update being available to Windows 10 users.
