set in the early 1950s, blacksad: under the skin follows the story of new york’s most infamous convicted felon, joe dunn, who is on death row. when his daughter sonia becomes aware of his crime and his fame, she assumes control of the boxing gym where her father used to work as a trainer and for which he is famous.

it’s been a while since i last reviewed a spanish game, but i’ve been meaning to look into what the spanish are up to on the gaming front. i’ve never been a big fan of the point and click/adventure genre, but pendulo’s blacksad under my friend’s direction has evolved me.

in contrast to the sometimes hard-to-read text that adorns the backgrounds, blacksad’s character models are expressive and always look noticeably good. the main character is a work of art in his own right, as he has such distinctive features that he looks significantly different from scene to scene, even when the background is the same. other characters are distinguished by their clothing, facial expressions and body type, and that helps to contribute to the impression that this game takes place on a very specific time and place.

pendulo has done an excellent job of preserving this ambient ambiance with their decision to limit the use of red, neon blues and other bright colors. the palette is generally restrained, with occasional variations on the color scheme. many areas that feature an architectural motif exhibit restrained use of colors akin to the terracotta colored buildings of santa bárbara and are probably one of the main reasons why this game scored an hd makeover on pc. the game uses neither the grainy, aliasing filter nor the pre-rendered backgrounds seen in earlier work like the ones that made pendulo famous.

blacksad is also excellent at making use of its setting, dark oaks, a seedy, crime-ridden corner of the city. the wide walkways between buildings, overlooked by derelict buildings like they were built in the city’s heyday, lend a sense of life to a place that might otherwise be mundane. this nod to the 1960s-era feel of the whole city is present from the beginning of the game, when it is first introduced.
in terms of gameplay, blacksad takes place entirely in the eponymous city. the player is guided through the streets and buildings looking for clues to solve a particular mystery. areas can be explored in different ways, from finding a combination of three clues in a single room to scouring the entire scene for more than a dozen objects of interest, all of which can be reviewed by examining them with a scanner. normally, you are presented with as little as five or six options before completing a task, and as many as one hundred at the most. the system mostly works, and the game plays out like an interactive narrative with a number of options to progress, though the inventiveness of the choices rather than their quantity is quite refreshing. the only issue is that some of them are quite obscure, often leading to confusing moments. my favorite example happened when the player was in a dark room where a police scanner hung on the wall, when blacksad mentioned a few items on the floor that, when inspected, proved to be part of a poem which the player had seen. i’d never seen something like it before, so i was a little confused.
the city is constantly evolving, and when you are performing a search, things often start to change around the area. doors open and close on their own, garbage flies in from the street through windows, or a street corner in front of you becomes a busy marketplace full of colorful people.
