where does the story fit in? its more like a set of touchscreen controls for super street fighter 2, except when you tap a different button, the text would change. whilst this is happening, youre filling up your bars. here, youve got plenty of time to do so because sections of the on-screen action are slowed down and youre free to flick the screen to negotiate the environment. rather than a minute hand running over the clock, however, you have to time how quickly to press a button to fill a bar.

it feels a little bit more action-oriented than some of the other beat em ups that came out in the past few years, but thats not a bad thing. this is still a fun, smooth game for a mobile platform. the fact that theres no pressure to hurry to the end is a treat. if your style of play is different to the game offers, you can adapt. there really is something here to play at all levels and, while its not going to redefine the genre, it does become something special as your skill level rises.

chunking up into a series of waves of increasingly difficult enemies and bosses, youll learn what each player character has going for them as well as picking up new attacks and unique counter moves. theres no real end goal, however, and youll lose the game if you level up too many times. i was over the moon to see the wall jumper back and its a joy to feel your arms whipping around like a mad man, repeatedly bashing to death all the enemies in the game.

once youve mastered a few fights and have the basics, theres an abundance of collectibles to unlock, such as skins for each of your weapons, alternate costumes for each of your character types, and a selection of parry and combo moves for use in specific situations. there are a few difficulty settings too. the default is something you can get a handle on quickly, but eventually theres enough strategy involved for you to step up and set off on your own path to victory. hitting a super will make you skip a stage, just as should ricocheting bullets off of platforms, walls and roofs, makes it clear when youre trying to beat the level that youre not getting anywhere near the best time.
the controls are a little too simple, almost to the point of being the point. there are no contextual menus to pull up different extras such as special moves. youll be able to parry, guard, dodge and block, but theres no defensive move list, and there are no early-game tutorials to help in understanding what youre doing or even what your enemies are capable of.
