His first feature-length film was La ragazza di Bube (The Girl of the Red Sea) in 1961. It is a comical adaptation of Lafcadio Hearn’s La ragazza di Burano, which has been considered one of the most important European books of modernism, and not only of Italy, but also of the whole world (the novel was an inspiration of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya). Ten years later, in 1971, Brass claimed in Positif that to make these films he had watched more than forty books, more than fifty movies, and more than six hundred short stories, but he admitted that he had never made a good use of this knowledge. “In the case of Tinto Brass, this is because he had no talent. But he always claimed to be able to do it by himself, for example to make a good adaptation. For me it is impossible. I have to use image and sound. Of course, the more knowledge you have, the easier you can make them”.

Despite its critical success, La ragazza di Bube is not well known because it was not distributed outside Italy and showed on Italian television only once (eight years later, in 1970). In 1959 Brass followed this film with I snob (shoes), a short story written by Luigi Malerba and based on a shoe that belonged to Victor Hugo. In 1961 he directed his first feature-length film, La ragazza di Bube, a comical adaptation of Lafcadio Hearn’s La ragazza di Burano. Three years later, in 1964, he directed a new film dedicated to the novel and classic tales of Edgar Allan Poe, La cecchina ebrea e i bambini greci (a.k.a. The White Sheik).

In 1967, Brass released perhaps his most famous film, the Nietzschian tragedy Caligola, a politically-charged version of the Roman Emperor Caligula, directed by his friend (and onetime assistant) Pier Luigi Carnera. The film mixes documentary and cinematic techniques to show Caligula in a hauntingly realistic way.
