the link in #9 doesn’t go where i was looking for. i went to the wiki to look up some info about sleeping beauty. i dont remember going there. since i can’t be sure of what i read, there is something that contradicts the information i have from the wikipedia page.

the reason that the great mouse detective is not the source of the sleeping beauty story is that is fictional. the case was published in hardcover in the 50s/60s, was adapted into a film (really not a good one) in 1988, and has since been adapted into at least two other books. (i know because i own them).

i know this because the ad for the mouse detective just started running on tv, and i thought, “why haven’t they put some books out with the fairytale solutions yet?”, because the premise of a mouse detective solving fairy tales makes sense.

you should read disney’s sleeping beauty for yourself. i just have a hard time with the story that some of the sources made up. i mean, maleficent is a virgin? what the hell? and, the character was based on a troll. this is the story of a character who has been turned into a villain who rapes people. this is how it should be told, not a fairytale where the woman is suffering from brain damage and was raped by a cannibalistic troll.

the music used in the film also reflects the time period. some of it comes from the renaissance and even the middle ages. but a lot of it comes from the period that sleeping beautycame out; its a sort of hybrid of pre-rock era pop and slapstick, or if you want to look at it more academically, a sort of bubbled up riff off of popular music. its a series of extended musical numbers played in parody of popular music; rock versions of love ballads, and so on, and with a lot of things that are not quite like the rock versions. this is almost like the first instance of an animated movie making a reference to the contemporary popular music of its era, and its the one place in my opinion where the special effect, animation, and music are in perfect harmony.
