Nirvana, Nevermind Full Album Zip
when we get it wrong, when we get frustrated because we cant hear what they were trying to say, when we get pissed off about the way they have been received for not saying anything and when we get sad because they have been ignored, their music is also ignored. some people, apparently, want to think that nirvana made a nice little record about nothings. it wasnt about nothing, it was about being angry and sad about nothing, it was about being sad and angry about something that matters. and that matters. i guess the next time im in the same headspace as smells like teen spirit i will think about how much i miss those days.
it may not be the ultimate song, but it’s certainly the best, and what a great way to end things. one of the things i appreciate about nevermind is how it functions as a part of a still very strong discography of great albums. it’s the ultimate closing statement from one of the most important albums of the 90s. if you need any more reason to love this record, its the fact that it is a reminder that its the best.
this page has the same content as the original version, but we think it’s a bit more concise. it’s also a little more accessible, especially if you’re a student or a casual music lover. we think this is a better way to consume information. now if you’ll excuse us, we have a funny video to take.
the grunge era arrived in the early 90s as a wave of angst spread across america, and, in turn, across the world. the newly released video for the not ready to die track something in the way provided a comical summation of the mood, showing the band members, who were still teens, making their way to a local coffee shop, then to a restaurant, and eventually to the big time. but, as the song implies, the journey was still a long way to go. the albums record for us sales was less than the band had hoped for, and only made one more album of any real note. but the album has aged like a fine wine, especially for the songs that remain crucial to the genre: its opening track, come as you are, is still an anthem; and when the video for all apologies was released, it instantly became a worldwide mtv staple, making nevermind the first album to have a video certified by the viacom-owned channel.
on march 10, 1991, nirvana played a free show at the campus of san francisco state university. there is a lot of irony in that as they have been that late to release a full length. maybe they were just trying to keep up with their peers, maybe they were playing off their recent success, or maybe they were just trying to get their show on their record label. after all, in the fall of 1990, sub pop wanted to have the best label– and cover– to go head to head with warner brothers and geffen records. nevermind was released on february 1st, 1991.
all of this comes to a head on “come as you are” where the song becomes a bit of a lament, a defining moment for this album, when the band takes on a different sound, almost like they’ve learned a little more than they thought they knew. but, as i said, this is a band that’s always trying to evolve and “come as you are” is a great example of that. “do the evolution” is a perfect example of how the band opened up and started to expand their sound on the second disc of nevermind. it’s also a song that has a great relationship to the album’s title and the theme of accepting yourself. there’s nothing wrong with embracing your own flaws and working on them, but to understand the album as a whole, the whole is more than the sum of the parts, or at least, that is what the band is trying to convey.
all of this leads up to the two classic albums that have been in the news recently. the first is nevermind’s twenty year anniversary reissue which starts off with a stripped-down demo version of “smells like teen spirit” in case you’ve never heard it. cobain’s vocal is even tinier than the backing track and it sounds like it was recorded on a boom box. the song sounds like it could have been on the demo tape that nirvana sent to sire. but, on disc two, things get a little interesting.
