Cannot get HttpServletRequest inside Servlet

I’m running a test Servlet that authenticates a user based on a j_spring_security_check request parameter. I’m logging into a custom HttpServletRequest called servletRequest.
I have a method in my JSP with a Javascript button, onclick of which calls a Javascript function, which then calls the method getAuthenticationDetails inside the servlet.
I can’t get the value of the request parameter inside the method.
My servlet method looks like this:
protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
String principal = request.getParameter(“j_username”);
…
}

My console displays:

Error 500
javax.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Target Unreachable, identifier’servletRequest’

From reading around, it seems like it’s trying to look up servletRequest when the method is being called. It can’t find it because it’s not visible or reachable.
Is there a particular way I need to instantiate the HttpServletRequest inside a Servlet?
It seems like a better way to do this would be to set the value of the parameter in the JSP, and then read it from the request inside the servlet.

You have to save this object in session
HttpSession session = request.getSession();
session.setAttribute(“principal”, principal);
session.setAttribute(“principalFormat”, “%s”);
request.setAttribute(“principal”, principal);

to read from session
HttpSession session = request.getSession();
String principal = (String)session.getAttribute(“principal”);
String principalFormat = (String)session.getAttribute(“principalFormat”);
