The Curse Of The Starving Class Script Pdf

“the work that i saw gave me the courage to go back to the source–to try to take the best that’s in there and work with it, rather than try to completely reinvent the wheel. in other words, i was trying to approach the script from a first pass standpoint. i don’t know if any of you have ever seen this script, but its got a lot of inversion and a lot of reversal, and that’s very difficult to do on the stage, or even on a stage. certainly not in the way that it’s written. so i was trying to find a very cinematic way of presenting it. the form of theatre that we use in the company is very static. it’s not something that’s actually moving; it’s very static, so to speak. so the idea was trying to approach it as a piece that was very, very long, and that really only has to move in one location. because we’re going to be using a lot of repetition of physical actions, where people will do the same thing over and over and over again. so, it was really about finding a way to do that and still make it clear who’s who. but, again, if you haven’t seen it, it was much easier to communicate that with pictures than it was with words.”

“curse of the starving class” is a play with big ideas, but i found that the play’s main ideas were easy to follow, easy to understand, and easily performed. i don’t know a single theatre company that does not value the story that is to be told at their institution. what i did not value was the theatre company that chooses to tell it. everyone in the play’s universe is willing to sacrifice, to lie, to beg, but very few want to do it together. they would rather sit around and watch their neighbors compete for the scraps of their neighbors’ misfortune. but i believe that we can all do better. we can work to provide a better life for those who need it the most. we can take care of each other.
